“The demon escaped. Sven and the sirens broke Jakob out. Be careful at the Network. They used dark magic. Cassandra is airing it out.”

I left out the part about how they forced her to aid them. No doubt she was tormented by what happened and we’d go over that later.

“They’re in a white van and Cassandra’s car and just left the Network. I’m following them through Salem now and will give you an update when I know more.” I ended my message.

The cautious driver in front of me took a left, and I exhaled. I inched my speed up to close the distance with the white van. Damn, that might be too conspicuous. I slowed back to a few car lengths and only sped it up when I feared I might lose sight of them.

After several minutes, I had an idea of where they were headed. “Don’t you dare.” My gut plummeted when it was confirmed. They parked along the shore near Lucas’s club.

Nova called me back. “Are you okay? I just got your message.”

“I’m fine.”

“Where are you?”

The most motley of crews walked onto the beach. “Near Lucas’s club. They just parked near the beach.”

“Okay, we’re on the way. Wait for us.”

I gritted my teeth, tracking their movements. “I can’t promise that.” If I had a chance to stop these monsters from ruining more lives, I had to take it. Before I ended the call, I said, “Warn Lucas.”

Lucas

I strolled along the Salem waterfront and tossed a few stones into the water. More like hurled them. When they plopped through the surface, the satisfaction quickly vanished.

The full moon was an odd hue tonight, with reds and oranges that reminded me of flames.

My phone buzzed, and I glanced at the caller. It was Nova. I growled.

“This better be good, Nova, because I’m not in the mood for chit-chat.”

“Lucas, listen to me,” she snapped. “It’s bad.”

I stopped walking and my spine straightened. “What’s bad?”

“The demons and sirens knocked almost everyone unconscious at the Network. Jakob escaped.”

My heart rapped against my ribs. “Zoe?”

“She’s the one who told me. She saw them drive away.” Worry edged Nova’s tone.

I turned in a semi-circle, not sure where to go. “Where is she?” I demanded.

Nova exhaled with a sigh. “She followed them.”

I sucked in a breath. “What?”

“I know, Lucas. I’m worried as hell. I told her to wait for backup, but you know how she is. I’m afraid she’s going after them and will be killed.”

My heart plummeted down to the sand.

Find her, my dragon demanded.

I know. For once, we had the same goal.

“Where is she?” I snapped.

“They’re at the shore near your club. She texted her location.”
