After I quickly summarized what happened and where we were, I ended the call. The Network would race down with a team. My heart pounded out the ticking seconds. We captured a freakin’ demon. I couldn’t have done it without Lucas.

Minutes later,a team from the Network arrived and took over. They hoisted the demon into a white van bound with magical fortifications.

They all stared at Lucas in dragon form. Like me, many had never seen one before, despite their time at the Network. Aside from him, I didn’t know of any dragons that lived in the area.

Once they drove the demon away, Lucas shifted to his human form.

Naked.

I averted staring but hadn’t failed to notice a body part that had remained covered up at the club—and it was impressive.

With Pandora and other witches from the Network still investigating at the scene, a stab of protectiveness shot through me.

“I’ll get you a blanket.” I dashed over to my car and retrieved one from the trunk.

When I returned it to him, I kept my gaze averted.

“Thanks.” A second later, he added. “All clear.” When I turned to him, he nodded. “Girl, you were impressive as hell tonight.” A proud smile crept across his face.

I cocked my head. “You weren’t so bad yourself, dragon.”

Pandora strode over. “What happened to the woman he’d attacked?”

I exhaled and searched in the direction I’d last seen her go. “I told her to run.”

Pandora followed my gaze. “That was the best move to get her to safety. We should try to find her and get more info. What did she look like?”

“Brown hair and eyes, about five-foot-six,” I described. “She wore black pants, heeled boots, and a red coat.”

“I’ll cloak myself and look for her,” Lucas volunteered.

Pandora and I both turned to him. Before I could say anything, he shifted back to dragon form, losing the blanket, and then took to the air.

“Lucas,” I called after him.

His enormous, beautiful wings flapped as he ascended higher in the sky. I stared in awe at his graceful flight.

“I like this shifter.” Pandora nodded with approval. “We lucked out with him volunteering.”

My gaze and thoughts returned to earth. “Temporarily.”

“Ah, too bad.” She pouted. “You two worked well together.”

When I pictured us kissing earlier and almost bumbling up this operation, my cheeks reddened. Despite our misstep, we’d managed to pull off an incredible feat.

“I’m going to check in the club once more, in case she ran in there.”

After such an intense night, I needed a moment to regroup. I went to my car to retrieve one of the wigs I’d stashed to wear in the club and put it on. After I entered the club, I searched for any signs of the woman or other indicators of trouble.

I asked staff if they saw a woman matching her description. No one did. If she was with others, they’d be looking for her, right?

Then how did she end up in the wrong place at the worst time, crossing paths with a demon? I didn’t learn anything. Instead, moments in there with Lucas flashed in my mind.

Now, he was soaring overhead in dragon form looking for a witness. So much had happened in such a short time, leaving me utterly confused.

Once the case appeared wrapped up, what did that mean? Lucas and I would part ways, each going back to our own lives?

Of course. That was the only logical outcome. We were too different to pull off anything otherwise.
