I had to think of something fun for us to do together. Zoe was so driven and serious, working so hard, and deserved to enjoy her downtime.

Besides, our time working together was limited, and I wanted time with her while I had the opportunity. My dragon was one hundred percent on board with that plan.

“We’re taking my car,” Zoe insisted.

“Why?”

“I like to drive.”

“Does it have anything to do with wanting to be in control?” I teased.

Her lips twitched with amusement. “No comment.”

Once we climbed into her car, she turned on the ignition. “Where to?”

I glanced at our surroundings covered with snow. “Cross-country skiing?”

She laughed. “You have a strange version of relaxing.”

“You’re right, I’ll come up with something else.”

While she drove from the Network, I found a station on the radio that wasn’t playing a commercial. That drove me nuts. At least the classic rock station had music rather than mindless drivel.

I scanned my brain for some fun things we could do on a snowy winter’s day aside from outdoor winter sports. Gardening was out. I loved it, but it was the wrong season. I pulled up my phone and searched for what was nearby.

“Aha.”

Zoe stole a glance at me. “Should I be afraid?”

“No, I know just the place.”

I pulled out my phone and opened a website. “How do you feel about bonsai?”

She squinted while staring at the road ahead. “As in miniature trees?”

“Right.”

“Out of all the things I thought you might suggest, thatmightbe on the bottom of the list.” She shook her head. “Nope, it wouldn’t even make it on the list.”

I chuckled. “I love plants. Our previous landlord, Margaret, showed me how to garden.”

“She was a gifted green witch.” Zoe’s voice sounded wistful.

I turned to her. “You knew her?”

“I did.” Her lips tightened.

“To honor her, I plan to keep her garden going.”

At the red light, Zoe turned to me. “That sounds like a wonderful way to honor Margaret’s spirit.” Her voice sounded wondrous, and her praise warmed me.

I shrugged. “It seems like the right thing to do.”

She studied me. “Once again, you surprise me, Lucas. You are a man of many surprises.” When the light turned green, she resumed driving.

“I have varied interests. And like to pursue them. What about you?”

She snorted. “My work schedule doesn’t leave much time for anything else.”
