Beside her was Zoe. I didn’t dare look at her yet after I’d frozen back on stage. My dragon was unpredictable around her, and I wanted to ensure that I was in control. Once assured I had my balance covered so I wouldn’t fall over her like a buffoon again, I continued toward her.
To avoid the wrath of my roommates, I quickly danced by Gianna and Nova. And then, I stood before Zoe again. My heart pounded faster, and my dragon pranced inside.
I took her hands and pulled her to her feet. Her scent reached me, and I was entranced once more. When I glanced into her hazel eyes, they widened.
“Lucas, what are you doing?” she asked in a low tone.
I waited to time my reply with the chorus and then sang, “Dancing with my elf.”
She burst out with a surprised laugh. “Oh my, you’re a crazy dragon.”
“Go with it,” I insisted.
When I spun her around, she complied, but when I brought her back to me, she asked, “Did you find anything?”
So serious and all business. I had to get her to loosen up. She wouldn’t get that info from me that easily, not without more dancing. As I led her through the song, I tried to impress her using a repertoire of moves I’d honed over the years. This naughty fun meant to rile her up, but it backfired on me. The sensual undertones struck me hard. In addition to my dragon’s excitement of having her close, something about dancing so close to her, having parts of her body pressed against mine, knocked me off kilter.
Her hazel eyes entranced me, green dominating the brown and bluish hues. Her scent was like a jolt of adrenaline right to my veins. And her mouth was right there—perfect, pink, shiny lips that I ached to taste.
My heart thumped so hard I thought it might burst from my chest. Need thrummed through me, bursting from my lips with a throaty growl. “Mine.”
Zoe
My breath ceased as Lucas’s gaze skirted my mouth. Would he kiss me? Did I want him to?
What did he mean by declaringmine? And why did I kind of like it? There were countless women here. Did he growl that to all of them?
Not that I could process it or think about anything while I lingered in a heady trance. He smelled phenomenal, a wild masculine scent I wanted to breathe in. The surrounding crowd disappeared. My breath quickened as I waited, waited, waited…
Lucas swallowed and then stepped back. He took my hand and then spun me around, snapping me out of that sensual spell.
I shook the lust off like it was a cobweb that had built up from months of neglecting my body and tried to follow his relaxed lead once more. He was a spectacular dancer, which was expected given his career. This wasn’t like me to dance so carefree like this—let alone like a sexy extra on the set ofDirty Dancing. Somehow, he made it exciting and fun—and oh, so smoldering. I’d never experienced such an intoxicating combination.
In the short time since I’d met Lucas, that seemed to encapsulate him. His relaxed nature made him easy to talk to, but beneath his amused grin was a potent eroticism that reminded me I was a woman.
No, it’s an act.
Right. Still, it was enjoyable, something I’d lost sight of in recent months as I’d been consumed with the trouble in Salem.
“You’re a great dancer,” he murmured, his breath warm on my ear.
“I think that’s all you leading me,” I somehow managed to reply.
Not only did he manage to break me out of my usual no-nonsense mode, but he ignited desire that had slumbered for far too long. Body parts that had long been neglected tingled with awareness. Like a sleeping dragon roaring awake with a fiery growl.
When the song ended, Lucas hugged me. “I enjoyed that.”
His body was so hot pressed against me, I was surprised I didn’t melt on the floor.
He released me. “I’ll see you later.” He kissed my cheek, and his gaze locked with mine for a heart pounding moment before he strolled away.
I gaped at him like an idiot while my body cooled. Women hollered as he passed them, snapping me out of statue mode.
I ran a trembling hand down my side, running it along the seam of my jeans.Whathad just happened?
I’d faced all sorts of terror inducing creatures during my time as a detective on the Network, but I’d never dealt with anything quite like that. It left me unsteady in an unfamiliar way.
Gianna’s hollering broke me from my spell, and I walked back to my seat like stepping through clouds.
