He opened the oven and glanced inside. After he closed it, he said, “Come on, Diego. You’ve been brooding in this house long enough. Your ex broke your heart. So what? You’re not the first guy it’s happened to, and you won’t be the last.”
“Yet, most guys don’t have the side effect of immortality to go with their broken heart.” Diana had convinced me to become a vampire two years ago so we could be together forever. Forever turned out to be six months.
“The ball is a perfect start for you to finally begin to live your undead life.” Sebastian said.
Lucas entered the house wearing a pair of leather pants so tight, it brought my attention to his junk. Not what I wanted to see. His loose-fitting white shirt would suit a pirate.
“Mmm, mmm, mmm. I love living with a chef,” Lucas said. “Smells good in here.”
With a proud grin, Sebastian declared, “I’m making spaghetti and meatballs with my grandfather’s special sauce.”
“Eww, that sounds nasty,” Lucas teased.
Sebastian moaned. “Everything with you is about sex.”
Lucas shrugged and tipped his head. “What can I say? I was born this way.”
“Says the poet who doesn’t know it,” Sebastian added.
I grumbled, “I need new roommates.”
That was the last thing I wanted. These guys turned things around for me when I moved in. Both were born supernaturals in a human world, and they helped me navigate it better. They were my family now.
Lucas laughed. “I hope you have enough for me because I’m starving.” He peeked into the pot Sebastian was stirring.
“You know it,” Sebastian replied. “I make enough to feed an army.” He gestured at Lucas. “Diego, you should be more like him.”
“Hungry?” I quipped with arched brows.
Lucas grinned. “Dragons have voracious appetites.”
“That’s not what I mean,” Sebastian scoffed. “Lucas knows how to live life.”
“That’s because he has one,” I pointed out.
“I strive to enjoy every day,” Lucas said with a cocky grin.
They didn’t get it. “We’re different. You don’t have the concerns I have to deal with, like an aversion to sunlight.” Aversion. More like death by sunlight. “Or a thirst for blood,” I added. When I’d agreed to shuffle off the mortal coil to be with my ex, I’d romanticized our pairing too much and neglected to pay attention to the downside of being a living corpse.
“Yeah, well, I have a thirst for something else.” Lucas plopped down next to me. “But it’s entirely pleasant.”
I groaned. “I don’t want to hear about your latest exploits.”
“Anything good?” Lucas flipped through mail addressed to him.
Sebastian said, “We got an invitation to a ball.”
I handed Lucas the invitation.
He read it. “Cool.”
“Guess who’s being a poopy pants saying he won’t go.”
“What are you, five?” I asked Sebastian.
Lucas stared at me like I’d turned into a merman. “Are you insane? Think of all the hot witches who’ll be there.”
I gritted my teeth. “Don’t care.”
