The air twisted and bent, the dark blot before her

defying logic and physics. Then it pulled in on itself

before thrusting forward into the room.

Three soul reapers appeared—two Roxy had never

seen before, and one she knew far too intimately. She

knew the thin, cruel lips and small dark eyes, the massive skull and hawkish nose. She’d been face-to-face

with him, inches away, while he got all up close and

brutal with her heart.

Cold terror chilled her. It was Gahiji.

Hunter.

Seeker.

She knew whom he hunted. Her. He hunted her.

To her shock, his words proved her wrong.

“The child,” Gahiji barked, his gaze fixing unerringly on Calliope. He prowled toward her. “Do you

think you can hide her? I found your first safe house,

and your second. But she is gone, now. You moved her

in a hurry. The mother left behind their clothes, the

child’s toys. Everything.”

Dagan stepped forward, and Gahiji turned to him,

his expression flat. “You interfered in your father’s

business already this week. Will you do so again, son

of Sutekh?”

Beside her, Calliope gasped. “Not merely a soul

reaper, but Sutekh’s son.”

No one bothered to confirm or deny her observation.

“Will you betray your own father, your remaining

brothers, in this matter?” Gahiji demanded.

Roxy saw Dagan flinch, and it didn’t take a stretch of
