And Dagan was returning the aggression measure for
measure. His fingers dug into Calliope’s throat and his
other hand was drawn back, fingers clawed, like he was
about to punch through ribs and muscle and take her
heart.
His gray eyes were colder than frost. He didn’t
move. Didn’t breathe. Didn’t look her way as he said,
“I told you, if you run, I will find you.”
Roxy took a careful step forward. She kept her gaze
locked on Calliope, though she wasn’t certain her normally even-tempered mentor was the sure bet.
“I didn’t run. I drove.” Okay. Lame. But she wasn’t
coming up with a whole hell of a lot here. “I left you
a note.”
He flicked a glance at her. “A note?” The way he
asked made it clear that he hadn’t read it, hadn’t seen
it. And it probably wouldn’t have mattered if he had.
“Dae, don’t hurt her.”
Her words made Calliope flinch.
Bad choice. She changed tactics.
“Calliope, stand down,” Roxy said, heart hammering so hard she thought she might be sick. He could kill
her. One serpentine flick of his hand and he could rip
out Calliope’s heart. Surely Calliope knew that; she had
to know she didn’t stand a chance.
