fathomless.

She could smell his skin. She could smell his wounds.

And just like that, the instant of clarity faded and she was

almost overwhelmed by the blood, the hunger, the need.

SINS OF THE HEART

Blood. She needed to make him understand. Was it

only a couple hours past that she had wondered what

his blood would do to her? Had she really thought that

she didn’t ever want to find out? How one’s perspective changed given the right incentive.

Willing him to watch her lips, she mouthed the

wordsNeed blood. Then she traced her tongue along

her lower lip, praying he would understand.

For endless seconds she thought he didn’t.

He was motionless, leaning so close that his hair fell

forward to brush the skin of her cheek.

“Parasite,” he said softly, more to himself than to her.

Still he did nothing. She knew it was only seconds,

but they felt like hours. Like an eternity.

Maybe he didn’t want her to survive after all.

She was his enemy. He had told her she would be.

Years ago he had warned her. And now, his comrade

had near to killed her. She needed no greater proof. As

a member of the Asetian Guard, she’d been warned that

the reapers were no friends of Aset or her Daughters.

But the Daughters were not so bloodthirsty as their

enemies. They only warned their soldiers to avoid the

soul reapers; they never instructed them to kill.

After this encounter, she thought perhaps it was because the Daughters of Aset wouldn’t stand a chance

in hell of succeeding.
