widened as she focused on Roxy, then narrowed, and

she padded forward with lethal grace. Roxy wasn’t so

refined. She was perfectly happy to play down and

dirty, and that’s exactly what she did as she pulled the

pin on the fire extinguisher, aimed and squeezed.

White foam hit the fire genie full in the face. The

creature froze. Roxy jogged back half a dozen steps,

waiting to see the result of her handiwork. Xaphan’s

concubine swept her palms across her cheeks, coming

away with handfuls of chemical flame retardant. She

flicked it aside and stalked Roxy, a step forward for

each step back. She looked anything but happy. In fact,

she looked downright pissed.

Roxy kept up her retreat, the fire extinguisher

clutched before her. This was not going as planned.

risk, committed to the plan and it looked like her gamble hadn’t paid off.

Panting, she switched her grip on the heavy canister,

planning to use it as a club. Then the fire genie stopped

dead in her tracks and made a sound between a gasp

and a grunt. Her hands flew to her face, her palms clapping against her cheeks, her mouth a round O of horror.

Roxy actually took a frantic look over her shoulder to

see what terrifying apparition lurked behind her.

But there was nothing there. It was the foam, she

realized as she turned back to her opponent. Looked

like her plan had worked after all, albeit with a slightly

delayed reaction; the foam was eating away at the fire

genie’s skin like acid.
