Roxy didn’t wait for him to repeat the directive.

Slapping her palm against wood, she vaulted the rail

and came down like a gymnast, knees bent, feet planted

for less than a heartbeat before she tore toward the

woods, running flat out.

A quick glance told her he was right behind her.

Why washerunning? Why didn’t he stay and fight? A

soul reaper was one hell of a powerful being.

“I’m trying to lead them away and spare your

damned house,” he snarled, answering the question

she hadn’t asked.

“What are they?”

“Fire genies.”

Creatures she wasn’t familiar with. But now wasn’t

the time for an in-depth chat. Roxy bolted for the thick

woods at the south end of the yard, her long legs eating

the distance.

“Not so fast, Otherkin.” The words came from too

close. Something snagged her ankle and she went

down, hard. The smell of burning leather stung her

nostrils. Her shoulder slammed against the ground.

Her chin bumped dirt and her teeth snapped together

so hard that she expected to feel tiny chips of enamel

on her tongue.

Twisting at the waist, she jerked her trapped limb

and found it held in a solid grip. She was slipping and

sliding as she rolled, and she struggled to right herself,
