“Because whatever brought these particular visitors

to your door is probably something I’m interested in.”

His tone was dryer than a Bombay Sapphire martini.

Fair enough. Her thoughts were running parallel to

his; that was pretty much the exact reason why she

hadn’t taken off in a burst of speed. Great, she was

thinking like a soul reaper. She wasn’t sure that ought

to make her proud.

Seconds ticked past. “What, no smart-ass quip?”

“I’m all out,” she muttered.

He made a sound that might have been a laugh before

letting out a soft hiss. He pushed her back with the flat

of his hand. Then he hooked a foot behind her leg and

held her there, as though he expected her to leap to the

fore.

She didn’t argue, not by word or action. She wasn’t so

stupid as to jump into the fray before she assessed the

risks.

“Fine by me. You stick your neck out, Krayl. I’ll

watch your style, judge theirs.” She paused, considered

and opted for the truth. “And, yeah, I’ll run like hell if

I think I’m outnumbered and outgunned.”

up and keep her safe. Why would she? She’d made a
