you. Never doubt it.”
She fisted her hand at her side. It wasn’t that he told
her anything she hadn’t suspected all along, but for
some reason hearing him say it pissed her off.
“What did you tell them about me?”
“Not a damned, fucking thing.” She’d never
revealed what he’d done to her, what he’d made her.
And the truth was, no one ever asked. Need-to-know
only. That was the motto of the Daughters of Aset and
their elite guard. They didn’t ask about her. She didn’t
ask about them. Whatever knowledge they offered, she
sucked up like a sponge, but she learned early on not
to look for more.
EVE SILVER
167
The secretive, elitist, bizarre world of the Daughters
of Aset and the Asetian Guard had become her own,
making her feel as if she wasn’t the only totally
screwed-up creature in this world or the next.
“Why didn’t you tell them about me?”
“Didn’t think you were important enough to mention.”
“No?” He reached out and trailed his thumb over her
lower lip. She jerked her face to the side, fighting the
urge to sink her teeth into his flesh, hard enough to
draw blood—hot, luscious blood—and the equally inappropriate urge to suck his thumb into her mouth.
His voice dropped to a rough whisper. “Then why
did you keep my jacket?”
