I’ll get something small and drink water.
It’ll be fine.
“Okay,” I sighed. “It was an accident.”
He laughed in earnest. “Youaccidentallymade it to Dallas instead of Houston?”
I nodded. “Yep. Told you it was funny.” I looked around the space again as he put on a pair of tennis shoes and knelt to tie them. “Who do you share this trailer with?”
I couldn’t help myself. Curiosity was getting the best of me, despite my attempts to ignore it. The alpha's scent was constricting around me the longer I stood there, and I found myself wanting more with every inhale.
I needed to get out of here.
“His name’s Night, and it’s complicated.” He grinned up at me from his kneeling position. “Not sure lunch is long enough to get into that one.”
I forced a polite smile. I could barely believe that Daze had just saved my ass. He lied for me and basically told Revel to fuckoff, and now we were going to get food. A bit of my nerves melted away as he stood and grabbed a set of keys off the counter.
“Do you want to leave your bag here while we’re gone?” he asked, gesturing to a mostly tidy couch. He ran his fingers through his hair, which did little to tame the rainbow strands.
The idea was tempting—the thing was getting heavy after hauling it around for a day and a half—but the thought of being away from my only possessions, and the suppressants, sent panic through my system.
What if someone came snooping? What if Daze’s roommate decided to poke through it and found them?
I shook my head. “I’m okay, thanks.”
He didn’t argue.
“Then, after you,” he said, pointing to the trailer door. “Hope you’re okay with walking.”
I chuckled dryly and led the way outside, pausing for Daze to lock up behind us. “After everything I’ve been through, walking a few blocks will be a breeze.”
CHAPTER TEN
REVEL
He’s covering for her.
He has to be.
I didn’t care what Daze said. That beta girl had snuck onto one of the Knotty Sideshow trucks and hitched a ride without anyone knowing. I knew it in my bones, and I’d been so eager to catch her in the lie. I just didn’t expect him to take her side.
Fuming, I shoved my hands in my jean pockets and trudged across the parking lot.
Arina. Even her name annoyed me, prickling my insides any time I thought about it. I shouldn’t have given her a ride in the first place. I’d stumbled upon her in a moment of weakness. Warring with myself about leaving the circus had made me vulnerable, but I should have left her on the side of the fucking highway.
I won’t make the same mistake again.
I’d only be looking out for myself from now on, and everyone else could get fucked. Especially Daze.
“What a bratty little dick,” I grumbled.
But what else did I expect from Daze Rodriguez? He had the entire troupe in the palm of his hand the moment he pranced into the big top, with his annoying-ass rainbow hair and too-friendly attitude. In Hallow’s eyes, the little fucker could do no wrong.
Hell, he’d even weaseled his way into Night’s bed. How? I didn’t fucking know, and I didn't care.
There was no way she was joining the circus. We didn’t need her. The sideshow was flawless as it was, and we didn’t need some newbie screwing up the dynamic.
Not to mention, I'd have to see her face every day and be reminded of the fact that her joining was inherently my fault.
