“Now, I shall take my leave,” Ryu said, putting his hands behind his back. “There are matters I must attend to, tasks to complete.”

Ella nodded, already distracted by the books before her. “I’ll see you at dinner, then.”

Nodding, Ryu turned on his heel and left. Despite himself, he looked back at her, and he saw that she was already ensconced in the little reading alcove off the side of the shelves, the sunlight streaming through the windows picking out the highlights in her hair.

He took that image of her with him, even as he left for the court again.

CHAPTER ELEVEN

Ella stood in front of the mirror, anticipation fluttering in her chest as she admired the exquisiteyukatashe had chosen for the Summer Festival.

Ryu had told her earlier in the week that the Twilight Court would be celebrating the summer festival soon, telling her offhandedly that he would send a seamstress to her chamber to make heryukataready, and to choose whatever fabrics and colors she wanted.

Now, the soft fabric of heryukatadraped around her, embracing her slender form with gentle grace. The long, delicate garment was a harmony of delicate pastel hues, blending shades of lilac and powder blue, reminiscent of a serene summer sky at dusk.

The fabric was adorned with an intricate pattern of blooming cherry blossoms, their delicate petals captured in exquisite detail. The floral motif flowed gracefully along the fabric, creating a sense of movement and life. Theobithat cinched her waist showcased a complementary design, featuring ethereal swirls of silver and gold, symbolizing prosperity and elegance. Her maid made quick adjustments to the knot, before finally leaving the room with a bow.

As Ella adjusted the long, flowing sleeves in the mirror, she ran a gentle finger over the subtle touch of embroidery that embellished them. The delicate threadwork depicted tiny birds in flight, their wings outstretched as if caught mid-song. The intricate embroidery added a touch of whimsy and brought a sense of enchantment to her ensemble.

Completing her attire were a pair of daintygetasandals, their wooden soles adorned with delicate floral patterns. It had taken her some time to get used to the footwear, but as she had tried them on for the first time that morning, Ella had been excited to see what she would look like in her Elven clothing.

As she gave herself one final look in the mirror, Ella smiled, ready to join the festivities.

Ella stepped into the grand hall of the Twilight Court, her eyes wide with awe as she took in the opulence and splendor surrounding her.

The hall was adorned with intricate tapestries depicting ancient Elven legends, and shimmering crystal chandeliers illuminated the space with a soft, ethereal glow.

Elves dressed in elegant attire moved gracefully through the hall, their presence commanding respect and admiration.

but she had not imagined it would be anything so grand.

The grand courtyard of the Twilight Court was hung with vibrant banners and colorful lanterns. The air was filled with a sense of excitement and joy, the melodies of lively music drifting through the warm summer breeze.

Lady Mizuki caught her eye as Ella looked around, beckoning her over. She was dressed in ayukatain shades of pale pink and lavender with intricate patterns of delicate wisteria, symbolizing love and longevity.

The soft cotton fabric cascaded gracefully around her figure, cinched at the waist with anobiadorned with elegant embroidery.

“Welcome, Ella!” she smiled. “I see you’ve dressed up for the Summer Festival,” she said. “I hope you enjoy yourself tonight, this is a cherished event where we honor our ancestors and celebrate the turning of the seasons.”

Hiroshi came up behind her, holding two skewers in his hand. He was dressed in akimonoof a deep indigo hue, adorned with intricate patterns of waves and goldenkoifish, symbolizing strength and good fortune. Thekimono's long, flowing sleeves swayed gently with his movements, and his obi featured a subtle, yet eye-catching design of cascading maple leaves.

“Here,” he said, handing over one of the skewers to Ella. “Try this, it’s delicious.”

“No, no, I’ll get one of my own,” she demurred, glancing between them both, “you only brought the two.”

“Oh, that’s alright,” Hiroshi said, the tips of his pointed ears going red, “I can share with Mizuki-chan.”

“Thank you,” she said, munching on the steaming, aromatic meat on the skewer. “It’s delicious.”

“This iskushiyaki,” Hiroshi said, grinning. “Skewered, grilled meat.”

Hiroshi took a moment to adjust hishaori, a short jacket worn over the kimono, which added a touch of formality to his ensemble. His feet were adorned with zori sandals, their woven straps securing them to his feet with precision.

The courtyard was transformed into a tapestry of colors and scents. Stalls lined the paths, displaying an array of delectable treats, from freshly baked pastries to exotic fruits and fragrant spices.

“Lady Mizuki, Lord Hiroshi, konbanwa,” a low voice said from behind them, and they turned to see a bald-headed, dark-skinned Elven man smiling at them. He was older than her friends, and the way they both bowed deeply to him spoke of his being someone important.
