Then he collapsed in convulsions.
Everyone panicked, running this way and that while Brian grabbed my hand and pulled me outside. We weren’t the only ones fleeing either. People darted out, ducking behind bushes and tearing down pathways like their feet were on fire.
It seemed like no one wanted to help poor Chase. What a shame.
I couldn’t help but smile as I glanced back at the fading house. Maybe if he’d been nicer, he’d have a friend or two that would be more concerned with him than they were about being caught.
Welcome to karma, Chase Ackerman. This was the place where you reap what you sow.
Even Brian—a supposed decent guy—didn’t stop to call nine-one-one. He pulled me across campus until we were safely tucked into the hedge maze behind the dean’s office.
“Holy shit.” I watched him hunch over and suck in a few deep breaths. “That was crazy.”
“Yeah,” I snorted. “Crazy.”
Or retributive, but we could go with his word.
“Can you believe that just happened? I didn’t know Chase was into drugs.”
“Well,” I shrugged. “You learn something new every day.”
By the way that Brian’s wide eyes were darting around, one might think a bomb went off or something. Chase’s foaming mouth wasn’t that bad. If he wanted to see something really fucked up, he should watch what happened when someone’s brakes didn’t work as they sped around a corner, sending their car careening off the bluffs.
Now that was a mess. But Steven Hamilton wouldn’t be risking anyone’s life by speeding again.
Brian took a few minutes to collect himself, after which I thought we’d go our separate ways. Apparently, I was wrong.
My brows knit as he grabbed my hands and looked deep into my eyes.
“Look, Marnie. I know this wasn’t the best date….”
It wasn’t a date at all.
“But if you give me another chance—”
His voice was cut off by a loud gurgle and spray of warm fluid that washed over my face. It took a second for my brain to register the coppery tint filling my mouth and the blade being dragged across Brian’s throat.
I couldn’t move or talk. I just stood there while his skin was sliced apart as easily as butter spread on toast. The sleeve of a jean jacket had my feet stuck to the ground.
The last thing I saw before darkness took me was the horror in Brian’s eyes and the cold gray stare of the man who killed him.
One of the greatest masks people wore was the façade of innocence. No one was truly innocent, not even children. There wasn’t anyone more selfish than a toddler who wanted what someone else had. That didn’t stop people, especially men, from searching for that sense of purity.
There was something built into men that filled them with the desire to taint the untainted. They enjoyed marking their territory, hence the attractive factor of virgins, which I never understood. Why the fuck would I want to train some bitch to suck my cock when I could easily find someone who knew what they were doing? Seemed like a waste of time to me.
Then Marnie Dupire came along, and the thought of someone else touching her…
Let’s just say there were a few men lining the bottom of the bluffs and one coating them. Geysers really fucked a body up. It took me a week to get all the bits of bone out of my hair.
My Little Bird didn’t know about that one. I wonder if she ever thought about her chemistry teacher. Guess he shouldn’t have paid her so much attention.
“Isn’t that right, Marnie?” I looked over at my beautiful little captive, passed out with her head flopped back against the passenger seat of my rental.
Damn, she looked good, covered in blood. My eyes trickled over the now stained fabric of her white shirt to the jeans hugging her hips. The outfit pissed me off. When she first came prancing out of her dormitory, I didn’t mind the view. I enjoyed watching her ass sway.
The best part was her look over her shoulder when I clicked my lighter open. The fear sparkling in her bright eyes damn near made me bust a nut. Stalking her was one thing. But toying with her…there wasn’t a high out there better than that.
Then she ruined my good time by walking up to that asshole.
