Luckily I didn’t have to think about it for too long because Mason’s cynical chuckle startled me out of trying to decipher the verbal vomit that had just been spewed my way. At least, I thought it was aimed at me. She could’ve been talking to the table for all I knew.
“See, I think it’s funny that you think Maggie will be allowed to date at all.”
“Ugh,” Shelby rolled her eyes. “Typical man. Of course she’ll date, and you know what else? One day she’ll fuck someone too.”
Mason’s face dropped. “Not if I kill him first.”
“Who says it’ll be a guy?”
I kind of admired the way Shelby’s brow rose, though I was starting to wonder who this Maggie, or Mags was. Shelby’s little sister, maybe? I’d never met her, but I’d heard about her.
Was Mason getting this riled up about a little girl that wasn’t technically his sister? That was disturbingly sweet and a bit hypocritical considering how he talked to his father last night. But who was I to judge?
Mason sat back and eyed her. “It doesn’t matter who it is. If anyone touches her before she’s thirty-five, I’ll cut their fingers off.”
It was scary how simple and easy he made that statement sound.
“Yeah,” Logan snickered while stuffing his face, “good luck with that.”
Shelby turned her arched brow on him. “The same goes for Tristan, you know.”
“What!” My heart jumped as Logan slammed his fists down on the table. “Who the fuck touched my sister!”
“Oh, calm down. She’s like one. You’ve got some time.” Shelby rolled her eyes my way. “You see what I have to put up with?”
I was suddenly really uncomfortable. More so than I normally was. The fact that both Logan and Mason were now staring at me wasn’t helping any.
“Um, I’m going to go shower,” I said and jumped up, getting the hell out of there before I could be dragged into whatever messed up argument they were having.
I stomped up the stairs, grumbling, “Should’ve made her eat on the floor like a damn dog.”
Freckles was damn lucky Shelby lived here. Not that I particularly cared – fuck what she thought. It was Logan I respected. I may be an asshole, but I wasn’t about to cause shit between him and his woman. If it wasn’t for that, Harper would’ve been on the damn floor.
Out of all the people who liked to get up in my shit, I never thought it would be Logan’s girl who fucked my day up. Riley and Star I could see, but not Shelby and her perky, sunshine smile. Though I was sure I’d face the wrath of the other two at school tomorrow. That should be fun.
I scrubbed a hand down my face and blew out a breath. Why the fuck did I bring her here? This shit seemed like more trouble than it was worth. Everything with Harper did.
Just when I thought I could ignore her and move on with my life, I’d hear her voice, or see her smile and be sucked right back in. Why the hell should she smile?
I ran my hand down the tan wall, tipping the edge of various pictures as I went. The swoosh sound of them swinging back and forth was oddly calming. Until I got to the one hanging across from my bedroom door. The smile on my mother’s perfectly painted lips was so fake, even I could see it.
Micha hated her and I got that, but I remembered how sad she was. All those times I walked in on her drying her tears were permanently ingrained in the back of my mind. Lou should’ve done something.
Then again, some people just can’t be helped. For all I knew, he did try. He was still helping me, after all. Wonder how long he’d keep that useless fight up?
Speaking of losing battles…
My brow cocked at the sound of running water trickling out from the other side of the door at the end of the hall. Was Harper in the shower? I thought that shit was just another excuse.
So she was capable of honesty after all. Would you look at that. Now if I could only get her to tell me the truth about everything else. ‘I fell’—still couldn’t believe she was trying to spin that tale.
Guess I shouldn’t be surprised, she had seven years to perfect her lying skills. She should be disappointed in herself. Fuck, I was disappointed. Thought she’d have come up with something better than that lame ass story.
I bet she was getting a kick out of this shit. Stupid little Mason Kessler will fall for anything.
My eyes narrowed on the door. Why the fuck was she inmybathroom? Who told her she could usemywater? Well fuck that. If she wanted to wash away her lies, let her use someone else’s shit. I paused and cocked a brow.
Wash away her lies. Huh?
