“He? You got a boyfriend coming to visit or something?” I ask, somewhat playfully.
She rolls her eyes again. “No. My boss. He decided to fly out to pick up the samples himself. And check on me. He thinks that I’m using this as an excuse to visit home.”
“Does he know you?”
“That’s what I asked,” she snorts.
The car stops, and the headlights shut off, showing the brand-new BMW convertible in all its glory.
Who drives a Beamer out here? How do you get a BMW as a rental car?
A tall, blond-headed man rolls out of the car, flashing a grin at Sutton before he extends a hand to me.
“Ronnie Jameson. Pleased to meet you,” he says with a fake drawl.
“Wade Callahan. Is there a reason you’re showing up at my ranch after nine at night?”
“Oh,” he chuckles lightly. “Came to see my girl.”
I stare back at him in disbelief.
Chapter Seventeen
Wade
“I’m not your girl,” she hisses. “You’re my boss.”
My fists clench at my side as I fight the urge to swing at this man.
“That’s what I meant,” he laughs again as he winks at me. “I came to collect the samples and see what we’re working with.”
“How did you even know where I was?”
“You used your travel card to book,” he shrugs nonchalantly as he looks around. “Since I’m here and haven’t found another place to stay.”
“There’s some room in the bunkhouse with our ranch hands,” I offer quickly as I take a step forward.
Robbie smirks, looking around me to where Sutton is standing. “I thought we’d save the company money by…”
“No,” she says firmly. “That’s inappropriate and not happening.”
She turns on her heel and stalks back to her truck.
“She loves to play hard to get,” he says in a low voice with a chuckle.
He tries to take a step past me, but I move in front of him again. I cross my arms in front of my chest.
“The bunkhouse has lovely accommodations. Otherwise, you’ll have to take your chances in town.”
“Who do—” he starts with a low growl.
“Here are the samples,” Sutton says quickly as she shoves a soft cooler into his hands.
“As far as checking the cattle or whatever else you have planned. It’s not happening. You know nothing about cattle or a ranch outside of a textbook. I’m going to shower and go to bed. It’s late. If you’d like to see what we’re working with, then you can be up with me at sunrise to do herd checks. Wade’s ranch and my father’s have been hit the hardest.”
“Why are you staying here instead of at your dad’s?”
“You know the answer to that. Stop trying to push buttons,” she hisses.
