“He’s desperate to help her. He’s ready to kill for her.”

“Is she in danger? Should we help?” I ask, a worry knotting in my chest at the thought of Alyse in trouble, needing me—us.

Alastair shakes his head and pulls the note from his mother out of his pocket. He points to the very next line.

“Our part is done for now. The rest of it is in their hands;hishands,” Alastair says, jutting his chin at Kazimir. “And Alyse’s. If she’s anything like you and Scarlett, she’ll pull through.”

The worry blooms into full panic. “Alyseisn’tlike us. She’s a bookworm, and painfully quiet. She’s never used a sword or a dagger in her life…We need to help her.”

“We just did,” Alastair says. We watch as Zane steps aside and Adrik leads Kazimir down to the dungeon. “Any more and we could unmake the prophecy.”

“Fuck,” I utter. “This feels like dancing on a zigzagged tightrope with a blindfold.”

Alastair hums in amusement. “Yes, let us hope our feet know the steps, and our hearts remember the way.”

I grin at him. “Are you trying to make poetry with me right now?”

“Did I do it right?”

“You did great.” I chuckle.

Alastair folds his mother’s letter back into his pocket. “Let’s hope Kazimir does, too.”
