“No, kiddo, that hard.” Hen winked at me. “But I have faith that Mark will figure out what Fran deserves… and what he deserves for himself, too.”

I was glad one of us did.

“Well, I have faith that Mark will hurry his ass up so he can get out there and get back safely, since the sun sets at like four o’clock this time of year.” Brian stood up also. “And also that he’s gonna call us when he’s home, or else we’ll send out a search party.”

“Good luck,” Liam said, squeezing my shoulder.

But after they left, I didnothurry my ass up. In fact, I sat staring out at the snowbanks lining the sidewalk for a full minute, thinking over what Henry had said.

Then with my heart in my throat, grabbed my apron and I headed to the back room.

Rae peeked their head through the swinging back door a little while later. “Baking cupcakes? Now?”

“Yeah. I’m bringing them to bring to Fran.”

“Really. What kind?”

“It’s a new flavor,” I told them with a nervous smile. I nodded my head toward the counter and the recipe I’d printed out. “I’ll let you know tomorrow whether it worked.”

They read the title, and a grin spread across their face. “For what it’s worth,” Rae said with a wink, “I have a really good feeling about this.”

I smiled back… and when the cupcakes were done, I put on my warmest clothes and headed out into the cold.
