He trudged to his sister’s room with the tea and muffin.
“Did I hear Evelyn’s voice?” Violet struggled to sit up more, then rested against the pillows lining the headboard.
“Yes, she dropped off some food. I brought the muffin, but there’s soup or sandwiches.”
“The muffin sounds good for now.”
He handed it to her and set the tea on the nightstand beside her.
“Evelyn is nice, isn’t she?” Violet asked as she broke off a piece of the muffin and popped it in her mouth.
“Yes, she is.”
“You seem to see her a bunch. You do go to Parker’s a lot, you know.”
“Well, we need supplies.”
“Like you go to Parker’s every single day.” She laughed. “Sometimes even inventing things we need.”
“I do not.”
“Do so.” She sat up and grinned. “Why don’t you ask her out?”
“Because…” Why didn’t he? Okay, there was the fact he was leaving soon, but would a date hurt anything? It didn’t have to be anything serious. Just… go out to dinner or something. Maybe he should ask her out. But then, maybe it would mess up the easy friendship thing they had going on. He didn’t want that to happen.
“Hello, Earth to Rob.” Violet rolled her eyes, then grimaced. “Ouch.”
“I’ll think about it. Maybe.”
“You should listen to me. I’m younger and wiser.” She grinned.
“Eat your muffin.” He let out a long sigh. “Call me if you need me.” He turned to leave. The dinner basket from Evelyn was calling to him.
“Hey, Rob?”
He stopped and glanced back at her.
“Thanks… I don’t say it enough. But thank you. For helping me with the resort. For taking care of me today.”
“Nothing I’d rather be doing.” Though, writing his next book might be a good idea. Although there was that pesky writer’s block thing going on.
“Liar.”
“Okay, but really, I don’t mind helping. I’m actually kind of having a good time.” He turned and walked away.
“Because of Evelyn. You like her,” Violet called after him in a sing-song voice.
Chapter 13
Donna perched on a stool in the kitchen at the cafe, sipping on coffee after the breakfast rush. Evelyn sat beside her eating a cinnamon roll.
“I hear the cook here is really good,” Donna teased. “Enjoying your breakfast?”
“Very funny. I am. First chance I’ve had to grab anything this morning.”
“So, Barry and I were out to eat last night. Went to Jimmy’s. Guess who we ran into on the wharf? Mother and Ted.”
“Mom and Ted were at Jimmy’s?” Evelyn frowned.
