“You would. I’m sure Emily would show you the ropes. Introduce you to more kids.”
“Wow.”Blake grinned again.
He wondered how many wows Blake could manage today.“So, the lawyer is going to work toward that, if you’re good with it.”
“I’m great with it.”Blake frowned slightly.“Does Heather know you’re doing this?”
“Kinda.”But why should he give her all the details? Heather hadn’t even bothered to tell him the tiny little detail that Blake existed.
“I wish—”Blake stopped and shook his head.
“You wish what? You can tell me.”
“I wish you and Heather could work things out. Get along together.”
As much as he longed to give Blake everything he wanted, he didn’t want to lie to him.“I’m not sure that’s ever going to happen.”
“You know, she was only a little older than I am now when she had me. I bet she must have been scared. She was all alone.”
He paused and considered Blake’s words. She probably had been scared. She certainly couldn’t have turned to her parents for help. But shecouldhave turned to him. Yet the realization of how frightened Heather must have been at the time waspossiblybeginning to chip away at the anger he’d been holding on so tightly to.Possibly.
“Can’t you at least try?”Blake’s eyes implored him.
And he’dtryto do anything Blake asked of him. Anything to make him happy.“All I can do is promise to try.”
Blake nodded.“Thank you.”He turned and headed to his room but paused and turned back.“It means a lot to me. I hope you two can work out your differences.”
Differences. Well, that was one way to put it…
Chapter 30
Donna and Evelyn stood in a suite at The Cabot that Delbert had given them to get ready for the wedding. Donna insisted it was too much, but Delbert had insisted it wasn’t. He won the argument. And it was nice to not have to travel in her dress. She just had to walk down to the pavilion.
“Ruby did a fabulous job with Grace’s dress, didn’t she? You look just lovely.”Evelyn buttoned the top button and smoothed out a bit of lace.
“She did do a good job. I feel like I have Grace right here with us.”Donna spun slowly in front of the full-length mirror.“It’s simple and perfect. Just a tiny bit of lace. Not too frilly or anything.”
“It is lovely to have the history of the dress, isn’t it?”Evelyn handed her the bouquet.“Here you go.”
“The flowers turned out lovely, Evie. I can’t thank you enough for all your help with this wedding. I never could have pulled this off without you.”
“Oh, you know me. I love planning events. And I can’t think of a more rewarding event than my sister’s wedding.”
“So…do you think Mother is coming?”Donna frowned slightly. She hadn’t heard a word from her since the Harbor Festival.
“I really don’t know. I called and left two messages. She never called back. I can’t imagine she’d miss it, but you know how stubborn Mother can be. Don’t let her dampen your joy.”
“I won’t.”She sighed.“I just sometimes wish we had a bit more—I don’t know—normalparents?”
“Enough talk about Mother. She’ll be here or not. But everyone else who loves you will be here. That’s what counts.”Evelyn gave her one more perusal from head to toe.“Yes, you look perfect. Are you ready?”
“I am. I’m so ready.”The two sisters headed out to the pavilion, and Olivia joined them.
“Mom, you look beautiful.”Her daughter’s eyes shone with approval.
“Thank you.”
“We’ve got everything set. I just have to signal them to start the music. Whenever you’re ready. Oh, and Heather and Emily are sitting down in the front row.”
