“Yes. Thanatos is the God of Death.”
My eyes went wide.
“The what?” I turned to Hades. “Call Megan back here. Right now.”
CHAPTERNINETEEN
“Calm yourself,my love. The furies cannot fall by the hand of any god. Zeus made a pact.”
“What if Zeus is dead?” I demanded, unable to keep my panic from bubbling over. “Then what? Does the pact still hold, or can theGod of Deathkill your daughter?”
Hades frowned, and I saw his uncertainty.
“Zotera,” I said, looking at her. “What do you know about Thanatos? Do you think he’ll hurt Megan?”
Her gaze flicked between Hades and me as she paled.
“I don’t know,” she said, her voice barely a whisper.
Yet, something in her gaze said that she did know, and I wasn’t the only one to see it.
“Speak, Zotera,” Hades said. “Tell us what you do know.”
She swallowed hard and shot me an apologetic look before focusing on Hades.
“Mother was talking to Thanatos.”
“Me? When?” I asked, sitting straighter.
She shook her head.
“No. The other mother.”
“Oh.”Oh, shit. What did it mean that Persephone was dealing with the guy who was now trying to kill me?
“Do you think Persephone did something to him that he wants revenge?” I asked.
Zotera shook her head ever so slightly.
“Then what?” I asked.
“Mother was planning something. A new way to torment you, Father.”
I glanced at Hades, who was watching me with a completely deadpan face.
“Seriously? You think it was me? What is it going to take to get you to believe that the Persephone you knew, the one who loved torturing you, isn’t me, the human right in front of you who makes out with you like a lovesick idiot?”
His eyes narrowed for a moment like he couldn’t decide how to take that question. Then his gaze flicked to Zotera.
“How was she planning to torment me?” he asked.
“She didn’t tell me. She only said that I would never see her again if it worked.” Her expression turned really sad. “She prepared a room and showed it to me so I could lead you there when she was ready. She told me never to open the door once you were inside.”
That had to be the room I’d found him in. But I’d only seen Hades and Persephone’s bones in that room.
“I don’t understand. What does Thanatos have to do with a new way to torture Hades? Was she running out of ideas or something?”
“I don’t know. She only confided what was necessary for me to lead Father to that room.”
