Owen stepped between them. “Come on guys, time to celebrate tonight, no fighting.”

“What did you do?” Keir again accused.

My eyebrows slammed together. Krew had told Keir we were doing this and though I wouldn’t exactly say Keir had been happy about it, he did at least know.

Keir used his magic to blow Owen aside and kept striding for Krew. “I asked you a question.”

Krew went silent, his eyes flying to me.

“Our magic is bound too, or did you forget that little fact?” Keir grabbed Krew by the tailcoat and brought him closer. “So tell me, brother dearest, howmuchmagic did you just give Jorah?”

I looked down to my hands confused. He’d just given me a drop. The normal amount.Right?

Krew had gone silent, not defending himself, not saying a single word.

“How much?” Keir demanded.

Heart pounding, I looked at my palms and back to the princes. “Krew?”

His eyes were on mine as he said gently, “All but a drop.”

Chest heaving, I looked at my palms and back at him. I couldn’t move my feet. I couldn’t think. I couldn’t move.

Keir shoved Krew’s chest. “How could you? How could you give up all the magic you’ve worked so hard to build?” Another shove. “After everything we’ve worked for, you just gave it all away?”

Krew shoved him back. “I’ll recoup as much of it as I can. And even after giving it all to her, I feel no different, no less powerful right now.” He paused. “You and I both know we are months, possibly years from getting father off that throne. We have time. And if we somehow manage to get our mother’s magic away from him, youcan easily handle him. We’ve practiced for years, and you are just as strong as I was. Owen would likely be able to handle him at that point. All of us arefarstronger than before.”

And now I was the strongest of us all?

John’s eyes were huge. “You gave her all but a drop, Your Grace?”

I was still looking at my hands, horrified. This entire time I’d been worried about a drop of magic changing me. Now one of the most powerful Enchanted in the entire realm had just handed me over all but a drop of his? I’d gone from no magic to one of the most powerful Enchanted in all of Wylan?

Krew was there in front of me, taking my face in his hands. “If you were going to walk through the fire for me, I didn’t want you to go it alone.”

I shook my head. “I don’t understand, you were only supposed to give me a drop.”

He smiled. “Traditionally yes. But I wanted you protected, as much as I possibly could. So I gave you it all. All but a drop. I’d rather work to get mine back than worry if you had enough.”

I swallowed as a tear spilled out of my eye, trailing down my cheek.

He brushed it away with his thumb, his eyes on mine as he said, “If you are going to have to help us take down my father, if you are somehow the key in all this, I wanted you as protected as possible. The rest of the realm can burn, but I made sure you willalwaysbe safe.”
