“Excuse me?”

“No.” I shake my head.

“You only said you didn’t want vocals. You didn’t say anything about the type of music. I thought this would liven things up.”

“No. I want classical. Music people can dance to, but still talk over.”

She sighs. “Fine.”

“And the menu?”

“I’ve hired a catering company, but they won’t be getting back to me with the menu until tomorrow.”

“What about the china?”

“Still working on that one. I’ve found several places that have white or gold, but nothing white and gold yet.”

“Give me some paper and a pen.”

She looks confused, but she hands the items over.

“This is the number for my assistant. Call her and tell her what we’re missing. She’ll hunt it down and make sure it’s here before the event.”

“Okay, thanks,” she says, taking the paper I handed her.

I nod.

“I’ll send back the tablecloths and the vases and should have some new ones here tomorrow. If you want to look at the vases before going ahead with them, you’ll have to approve them tomorrow. I have to send them to the florist.”

“That’s fine. If that’s all, I will get out of your hair. It looks like you have a lot of work to do.”

“A lot more since you’ve walked in.”

I laugh. “That’s what they tell me. Feel free to reach out if you need. You still have my card, right?” I’m at the door, but I turn back.

She nods.

“Okay then. I guess I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“I’m looking forward to it,” she says, but I can hear the sarcasm in her voice and instead of annoying me like it usually would, I get a kick out of it and it makes me laugh as I walk out and back to my rental.

I climb behind the wheel and pull away. I don’t realize until I get to my hotel that the smile Destiny brought out of me is still in place. That’s when I know I need to ask her out. I must have her. My only problem is figuring out how to get her to like me instead of hating me. I hope and pray that she doesn’t hate me, that I’m more of an annoyance than anything, but only time will tell.

Chapter Seven

DESTINY

Iwatch him walk out, and no matter how hot that man is, it’ll never make up for how big of a dick he is. I can’t believe he threw such a fit over the tablecloths. They are white. Maybe not crisp white, but they’re white. And who has ever said that clear vases look tacky because you can see the stems? Nobody! I think he likes driving me crazy. That’s the only explanation. Why can’t he just let me do my job? If this event looks bad, it’s coming to come back on me and my business. Doesn’t he understand that? No way do I want to take the fall for his bad decorating.

I fall back into my chair and let out a huff of air. I don’t know how I’m going to manage to get everything he wants, but I will start with the tablecloths and the vases. I pick up the phone to request a return.

Friday finally arrives and it’s been a hell of a week. I managed to send back everything Mr. Billings didn’t approve and I to reorder everything exactly how he wanted. I even got in touch with his assistant, who spent two days searching New York to find his exact place settings. They should arrive first thing Monday morning. Now that it’s five o’clock on a Friday and I’ve basically been a saint all week, I’m going to go out and have a little fun.

I pull on a sleeveless back dress that hits mid-thigh and I wear my favorite black pumps. I pull on a jean jacket and leave my hair a curly, fluffy mess. After applying some smoky eyeshadow and some red lipstick, I’m looking hot and ready to spend the night dancing with Beth. I climb behind the wheel of the car and drive to the bar and grill. It’s going on six, so it’s not all that busy yet. Right now, it’s mostly people stopping in after work for a quick drink or the early birds coming for some dinner. I plan on staying until they close.

I park the car and look around for my sister. Her car is nowhere in sight. I grab my phone from my purse and dial her number.

“Hey, I was just about to call you.”
