“You have nothing to be sorry for. It was my own stupidity and ego that got me caught. I made myself a promise when I got into uni that my hacking days were behind me. I broke a promise to myself. Was too cocky. I have no one but myself to blame.”

The intensity of his gaze has me looking down at our hands.

“Somehow, I still think there’s more to this.”

Elijah always could read me. Explains my intense infatuation. I could be myself, and he accepted that wacky side of me.

“Don’t read into it,” I say, going to pull my hand away but finding it held fast. “It is what it is. Fate takes us down certain pathways. Some of our choosing, others not. You know that better than anyone. Sometimes, we must simply play the hand we’ve been dealt.”

We both fall silent, our eyes moving to where our hands are joined.

“Pen.” Elijah’s voice comes out strained.

“Don’t,” I tell him, pulling back and flattening my hand on my leg, pressing my fingers into the material.

“But—”

“No.”

My phone rings again, and I get up and move away.

“Tailor.”

“He’s in custody,” is the only reply I get. “Bring Mr Frazer.”

I turn to stare at Elijah.

“We need to go.”

CHAPTER 30

PEN

Elijah drives us to the police station where they’re holding Peter Levon. We’re greeted by plain-clothed officers who lead us into the maze of corridors before taking us into a debriefing room.

“Has he said anything?” Elijah asks, taking a seat.

“No, he’s requested a lawyer, who is currently on his way.”

“Do we know the name of the lawyer?” I ask, my suspicious mind running.

The lawyer he has chosen may be the key to who is behind this.

The officer passes over a piece of paper with the name on it. It’s not anyone I recognise, but then again, it doesn’t surprise me. I’ll need to investigate potential connections. The law firm is small, but it doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a parent company lurking in the background.

Another officer enters.

“Evening, Mr Frazer. I’m Detective Ross. Sorry to have called you in so late, but we felt it important because of the severity of the claims you’ve made.”

Elijah stands and shakes the hand of the man who entered.

“Are you ready to give your statement, Mr Frazer?”

“I am.”

Detective Ross looks over at me, and I nod. Time to make myself scarce.

“I’ll have a colleague take your statement as well, Ms Dawson.”
