I’m sitting in my office trying to finish up any last-minute items before I leave for the Thanksgiving holiday. Lana, Paige and I are driving up to Albany tomorrow to share the holiday with my parents. They want to meet their soon to be daughter in law again. We plan on getting married in a small ceremony in the spring. We will only be inviting close friends and family. My phone rings just as I’m shutting down my laptop.

“Lana, I’m on my way. I promise.”

“You better get home soon.”

She sounds angry, but I know different. We’ve been trying to get pregnant, and she thinks that she might be now. I told her I wanted to be home when she took the test. I race out of the office, and I’m home in forty-five minutes. She greets me at the door with the pregnancy kit in hand.

“Go, go,” I say as I shrug out of my coat.

She ducks into the hall bathroom, and I hear her peeing.

“Are you coming?” she calls.

“Right now.”

The pink stick is sitting on the light granite counter, and Lana is turned away, checking her watch.

“I have another forty-five seconds.”

I glance at the stick, but I’m not sure if it says she’s pregnant or not.

“Zane, are you looking?”

“No. Even if I was, I have no idea what to look for.”

“The plus. If it’s a plus, then I’m pregnant. Times up. Let’s look together.”

We both look, and there is no plus. Lana seems sad, but I smile.

“Why are you smiling? I’m not pregnant.”

“Because we can still have fun trying.”

“Can we right now?”

“Paige will be here in a little while.”

“How long?”

She checks her watch, “A half-hour.”

“That gives me plenty of time to mess up the sheets. Or would you like to do it here on the vanity?”

“Zane, you’re a caveman.”

I pick her up in my arms and carry her to the bedroom, telling her that if she calls me a caveman, I’ll act like one. I can’t stop smiling because our relationship is on track. We barely get dressed just in time for Paige’s arrival. My sister looks at us and laughs.

“What’s so funny?” I say.

“You two. I’ve never seen you so happy, even before.”

She’s right. Our relationship is better than ever. Soon we’ll be married and eventually parents. If you would’ve told me a year ago that this is how my life would turn out, I wouldn’t believe it.
