I learned that lesson when the Hunters captured me and left me less than whole. When I escaped, my friends were the only ones to keep me going. I’d do anything for them.
Anything but believe them when they say that this Elite is different. It doesn’t matter that I wear Dirk’s marks on my side. It doesn’t matter what he says. I know the type of people he’s lived among, and I know what they’re capable of.
Yet everything pushes me toward him, even my freshly awakened dragon. She preens for him and thinks that he’s the best thing we’ve ever smelled. A cool breeze on a hot day. A clean shirt just off the line.
But she wasn’t there for me when I needed her most. When the days were dark, and the pain in my stomach felt like it would never fade. So I can’t listen to her now, when she insists I let him in.
Not just because it was dragons like him who broke me. But because after my friends glued me back together, he shattered me with a single truth.
