Vowed

A patient just confessed to murder in my ER.

He said his powerful family buried the evidence and he couldn’t bear the guilt anymore.
I reported, just like he asked.
But then his family came for me…
This morning, I came home to find my apartment door wide open, and everything inside has been destroyed.
I’m looking at the wreckage when I hear footsteps behind me, and someone growls, “Don’t go in there.”
I turn around to see my firefighter neighbor standing behind me, still in his uniform.
He moves past me into the apartment, and returns just moments later holding my cat against his chest.
He growls,
“You’re staying with me.”
